Barnstable is the largest town in Cape Cod and encompasses 76 square miles between Nantucket Sound and Cape Cod. It includes the seven villages of Osterville, Hyannis, Cotuit, Centerville, Marstons Mills, Barnstable and West Barnstable. These villages are all distinctive and have much to offer. They all have unique bays, ponds, inlets, harbors, wonderful beaches, walking trails as well as many shops and restaurants.
At the very beginning of the Cape is Bourne, where the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges take you over the Cape Cod Canal to your vacation.

Cape Cod Canal
It is impossible to talk about Bourne without talking about the Cape Cod Canal. The 17.5 mile canal, which completely separates Cape Cod from the mainland, sees 14,000 commercial and recreational vessels each year. Boat watching replaces people watching along the canal, where you can see anything and everything from scallopers to cruise ships pass beneath the bridges. The paved roadway along the off Cape side of the canal and the recreation sites on both sides are ideal for walking, jogging, picnicking and fishing-but no swimming due to the currents.
The History of Bourne
The history of Bourne is alive in Bourne Village where you can visit the Aptucxet Trading Post Museum, the Briggs-McDermott House and other historical buildings including the Gray Gables Railroad Station built for President Grover Cleveland during his presidency (1893-1896).
Bourne is also home to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the Massachusetts National Cemetery and Joint Base Cape Cod.
Bourne Seafood
If it is seafood you want, it is seafood you will find at Bourne’s many wonderful restaurants. Each September, it’s all about the scallop at the annual Bourne Scallop Fest—three days of delicious fresh scallops (and other tasty treats), fun and entertainment. Traditionally held on Main Street in Buzzards Bay (a village of Bourne), in 2014, the festival will be held at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds in Falmouth.
