Eastham is found where the Outer Cape begins and is best known as the “Gateway to the National Seashore” protecting over 27,000 acres of the Outer Cape. Eastham is a narrow strip of rural country with marshes, bogs and forests that are unharmed by time. It is bordered on the east with miles of beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, and on the west by miles of beaches along the Cape Cod Bay. The Cape Cod National Seashore Visitor Center is located in the heart of Eastham and is the main facility for Cape Cod National Seashore. Here visitors can see a museum of natural and cultural history, take a guided Park Ranger tour, or use the bike trail to Coast Guard Beach, once rated the number one beach on the east coast.
Eastham is one of the first pages in American history. First Encounter Beach is the site of the first meeting between the Pilgrims and the American Indians. Descendants of Mayflower settlers still live in the area. Three of the original passengers are buried in the Old Cove Cemetery.
Eastham is home to Cape Cod’s oldest working windmill, built in 1680s, and host to community functions, arts and crafts shows, and the annual “Windmill Weekend” held in September. Along with several historic buildings, sites and museums, Eastham is proud of its many National Historic Register designations, such as the old Schoolhouse Museum, Nauset Lighthouse, Fort Hill and Indian Rock, just to name a few.
Experience Eastham’s hospitality as you dine on local seafood, visit specialty shops, rent bikes for an outing, workout at the Cape’s largest gym, play on the beaches, or absorb all the history and natural wonders it offers.
