As the story goes, this treasure was recovered in 1984 from a sunken 18th-century ship called the Whydah. The Whydah was originally a slave ship but was captured by Samuel Bellamy, the wealthiest pirate in recorded history and one of the best-known figures of piracy’s Golden Age.
The Whydah sank in a nor’easter storm off the coast of Wellfleet in 1717, taking Bellamy and his crew with it. The wreckage’s recovery in 1984 made it the first fully-authenticated Golden Age pirate ship ever discovered in North America. You can get close to the treasure and other items from the galley at the Whydah Pirate Museum.
2) Skull Island
Keeping with the pirate concept is Skull Island, an amusement park on Main Street in South Yarmouth that your kids will absolutely love. This park has mini golf, go-karts, a driving range, and an arcade, so your children can spend the day participating in many different activities.
The mini golf course features a pirate theme, with waterfalls, a haunted treasure cave, and alligator-infested water traps. Don’t worry; the alligators aren’t real.
The arcade has various video games and air hockey tables, while the go-karts track gives your older kids a bit of freedom as they rip around the course.
3) Ryan Family Amusements
Ryan Family Amusements is a staple on the Cape, with locations in Barnstable, Buzzards Bay, and Yarmouth. It also has a full bar for parents to have a drink or two while their kids play.
